Student Forum on Climate Change, discuss how creative artists can contribute

Martin Percy’s film Climate Emergency Interactive

In January 2022 students and researchers from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil (LAPETT - USP), the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (MFA Dance) and the London Contemporary Dance School (MA Screendance and Expanded Dance Practice) have come together for a ‘watch party’ of Martin Percy’s (University of the Arts London) film Climate Emergency Interactive. Participating students then developed creative responses to the film and to the pressing issues around climate change. At the IFDA student forum, student leaders from LCDS hope to introduce the project to students from other institutions and create potentially more partnerships so more young people can consider what they, as artists, can do to address the climate emergency.

Sharing on the creative process by MA student Brian Scalini about his new dance production for Ballett Theater Pforzheim

MA student Brian Scalini will guide you inside the creative process of his new creation “On the Shoulders of Giants” for the dance company of Theater Pforzheim. In this work, an interlaced journey of common people and imaginary figures draws attention to how interconnected we are to one another. Sparking the idea that imagination is important for adults too, and it should not be something that we leave behind in the process of growth.

Starting from the definition of the concept, Brian will introduce you to his first experience with an established theatre in Germany, with attention on the movement generation and composition in the studio, the sketching of costumes with a costume designer, the creation of lights and use of the stage, and the definition of a marketing strategy in agreement with the theatre.

Structuring a Contact Improvisation Performance

This forum has emerged from the Independent Study project based on learned courses and projects at HKAPA and beyond. The project will present research on personal movement philosophy and approaches in CI. The forum will encourage sharing of research questions, concepts, practices, and outcomes towards developing a Contact Improvisation Performance in 2023. The sharing will include how the project aims have been met and negotiated between the leader and participants towards developing a strong understanding of CI for all and beginning to consolidate ideas to create a full-length CI performance. At present, the ideas include developing structures through strategies such as increasing the number of dancers, adding limitations and restrictions, music, costumes or exp it loring different spaces.
